Gatwick to Paddington Station

Key thing is...are you aiming to take a train from Paddington? If so you may be able to avoid going to Paddington at all and pick up the train at Reading, say.

If you are taking a train from Paddington to the west of England, you can take a train direct from Gatwick to Reading and change onto the Paddington line there, which will be less hassle than crossing London by tube.

If you are staying somewhere near Paddington, probably the best thing to do is to get the train to Victoria and then the Circle Line to Paddington.

My hotel is across the street from Paddington Station, which is why I'm trying to plan transport from Gatwick to that particular station (or the equally close Warwick Street tube station).

I'd take the 436 bus rather than the underground between Victoria and Paddington especially with any luggage. Both Victoria and Paddington have a number of stairs to negotiate.
