Gatwick Express tickets

Not having flown out of Gatwick for ages, I was kind of surprised today when I tried to buy Gatwick Express tickets online for this Friday.

My credit card got rejected. I tried again. No luck. I tried a different card. Nope. And then I read the error message:

Credit cards can only be used online in the country in which they are registered. So, my good ol' USA credit card can't be used for the Gatwick Express while I'm in the UK.

Makes a lot of sense, right?

Luckily, they take PayPal.

I thought some might like to know in case they were planning to buy tickets after they got here.

This is a fascinating post, in that there was no problem whatsoever using our USA CapitalOne Mastercard online while in London on March 14 to purchase Gatwick Express tickets online for March 21. Including the 10% online discount.

My guess is the credit cards involved were not working through 3D Secure

These credit cards have been used in the UK and through 3D secure in the past. Chase Visa and American Express. In fact, I had just used one to purchase a ticket online on Easyjet.

It's possible that it was a temporary glitch but I had never encountered that in the past.

I just had the same problem buying tickets on Southereastern.

Then I thought of something, I activated my VPN that shows a U.S. IP address. The purchase went through without a hitch.

So the problem was that you are physically in the UK and using a US credit card for an online purchase?
