Gatwick Express...or not?

On Sunday, 5 June, I need to go from Lambeth North to Gatwick in the late morning. As there several ways to do this, I'm wondering what is the easiest way?

  1. Take a cab to Victoria and catch the Gatwick Express

  2. Ditto, and take the Southern line

  3. Take the Bakerloo line to Waterloo, change at Clapham Junction and catch the Southern line to Gatwick.

I know I can use my Oyster card for the journey (unless I do Gatwick Express). I'm not going to quibble over a couple of pounds but as someone on a message board told me this would be about 19 pounds, vs. about 18 pounds via GE...well, I'm getting confused.

Can anyone please advise? Thank you!

www.nationalrail.uk says it is 6 GBP more to use the Gatwick Express train over the Southern train. Travel times are about 1 hour for all (from Lambeth N).

Sandra,

I normally use the Gatwick Express as it's the quickest method, and I don't mind paying the cost. I did exactly what you suggested in September - took a Cab to London Victoria and then the G.E. to the airport. In the big scheme of things, a few extra Pounds is not going to be a huge hit on my travel budget.

Fast trains to Gatwick will generally NOT stop at Clapham Junction, so I wouldn't go that way.

Or 4. 12 min walk to Elephant & Castle above ground rail station (not the tube station with the same name! it's just beyond the traffic circle, behind the shopping centre, off Elephant Rd look for and follow the overhead rails). Ride Thameslink train one stop north to Blackfriars station. Switch to Thameslink southbound train to Gatwick. £7.90 Sunday fare, can use Oyster card, 67 minutes train plus walking time. If you go to the Thameslink website, there are faster 60 minute options using 3 trains, changing at Tulse Hill and East Croydon, same price.

Or 5. cab to Blackfriars station (south bank of Thames, very close access if dropped off at north end of Hopton St near Founder's Arms pub, station is visible up to the left, 75 ft walk toward river between buildings then turn left, use lift to the station which is above the river) then 1 train from there, 48 minutes, same £7.90. I suspect the cab ride to here would be about half the cost of the trip to Victoria, and no chance of congestion.
