Gatwick Airport Cancellations

Yesterday there were a large number of cancellations and delays at Gatwick Airport due to a shortage of air traffic controllers.

Other sources detail how flights were diverted to airports as far away as Cardiff and Bournemouth- quiet airports which had capacity.

Bournemouth is a regional airport which mainly handles charters and scheduled flights to the Channel Isles (Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney), but has a long runway and lots of capacity so does get used in such situations. The airlines would have laid on buses back to London, but that takes time for them to arrange and then your time back on the land transfer.

These things happen at short notice, randomly, but illustrates again why you should build in buffer time in London, rather than looking to move straight through.

I always build in a lot of buffer time mostly because i hate last minute stress that comes with rushing.

There are staff shortages everywhere in all fields. And with air controllers, it is not like you can just go out on the street and find a substitute.

I feel for those travelers who got caught up in the mess but also feel for the staff who had to deal with the chaos as well.

I'm arriving at Gatwick on Sept 25 at 9am and plan to train it to Bath (via Redding) then on to Devon and Cornwall ( and then a loop through all of England north to south), so a diversion to somewhere else in a way would be great for me. But of course for other people's sake I hope things run smoothly. I have the luxury of time.
