Fulham or QPR

Hi - our family wants to see a football match while in London. We’ve chosen either Fulham or QPR. There’s 6 of us (2 adults, 4 kids). Do you recommend one ground over the other? Atmosphere, price and availability are important.
QPR plays Norwich and Fulham host Leeds. TIA.

Another vote for Fulham!! I've been to quite a few matches and can recommend it. Very easy to get to there from central London by tube or bus and tickets are pretty much always available. Their customer service has also been very prompt and helpful when I have had questions.

Family friendly atmosphere and Craven Cottage (the stadium) is a cozy historic place to watch a match. Seats in the "Riverside" section are close to the action and reasonably priced (under-18 get 50% off in most sections too), plus during halftime you can enjoy the view over the Thames. Fulham are currently challenging for a playoff spot, so if they are still on form, this is also more likely to be an exciting match.

I would also opt for the Fulham game however be aware that whilst football violence and hooliganism has been clamped down upon considerably since the 70's and 80's there are still a number of moronic louts who insist on causing trouble and amongst the worst offenders are Leeds fans. Here's a table showing the number of 'incidents' involving clubs and their respective fans. Unfortunately my local team makes the list!

NO. OF INCIDENTS IN 2016/2017

Leeds - 37

Aston Villa - 26

Birmingham - 23

Sheffield United - 17

Sheffield Wednesday - 16

Millwall - 16

Derby - 14

Portsmouth - 14

Nottingham Forest - 13

Doncaster - 10

There will be a significant police presence and if you avoid seating near to the segregation point you should be fine. The fans will have their established pubs to drink in beforehand (never mixed!) and it will be obvious what pubs these are if you're approaching them....avoid.

How old are the kids? Whilst the atmosphere inside the stadium (and outside on the lead up to the match) can be exciting and atmospheric it can also be quite intimidating for young children. Expect lots of chanting, 'singing' some of which can be inappropriate for children and some displays of hostility and racism, it's all quite robust in nature.

What about Rugby? A much better atmosphere and a much better game. No violence, no segregation, no hostility, no racism and far more family friendly.

OP here. Thanks for the replies, very helpful.
One sticking point with the Fulham game on 3 April is that it is currently limited to Season ticket holders, members and prior purchasers. Any idea if this game will be open to general sale? Any way to get someone to buy me tickets?

Yes, Fulham are 5th and are fight for promotion, plus it’s a TV game.

Trouble at the football is very rare.
Both Wednesday and Leeds will have about 500,000 thorough the home turnstiles in a season and the pair usually have the biggest away followings too.
Leeds played Sheff United last weekend and I heard of no trouble in town.
You could do worse than fire off an email to Fulham, or sign up to a fan forum.
Do not buy from an agency whatever you do..
It's technically illegal and runs the chance of the tickets being void once you get to the game

As a young man I spent two stints in Britain and became an ardent fan of the real football, much more skillful and entertaining than the dopey American football. I was forced into supporting Mansfield Town ( friends of the family) and follow the Mighty Stags to this day. During my stays I visited Craven Cottage, amongst a half dozen or so other stadiums, and to the best of my memory it was a great time as it was one of the few times Mansfield won that particular season - I think they were relegated. We went to Fat Fred's fish and chip shop after, a gourmet delight.
I watched the Spurs game today, wonderful. And, from what I remember, Leeds were as rough and tumble on the field as they were off.

I don’t think you’ll have trouble getting tickets on general sale. The lower divisions rarely sell out, even if a team is going well. Usually only exceptional games (e.g. last day of season with chance to win promotion) or local derbies sell out.

Don’t worry, you will more than likely get tickets, and in the highly unlikely even you don’t there are plenty other options available.

Just want to say that at all Fulham matches I've attended, the atmosphere has been friendly and more or less "civilized" and I wouldn't feel uncomfortable bringing kids there. There are always lots of families with young kids in attendance. Yes, the visiting fans can be loud and sing songs with some "salty" language, but there has never been any situation where I've felt threatened or unsafe. Fulham doesn't seem to be a team that gets people too fired up and aggressive...I'd say I have seen a lot worse at Red Sox-Yankees games back when I lived in Boston!

Re tickets, they just went on sale for this game quite recently. I'd say check back in a week or so and see if they have gone on General Sale. As another poster suggested, you could also email Fulham and ask - they have always answered me within 24 hrs.

It's not the Fulham fans you need to worry about it's the Leeds fans. 37 incidents of violence in one season is quite significant in today's football and whilst I'm not intending to dissuade the OP from attending the game or engage in scaremongering it's only fair that they are aware of the reputation that Leeds fans have and they can attend the game in full awareness.

Yes, I was one of the lucky folks having to deal with the Pompey (Portsmouth) crowd last weekend. Lovely lot. I hate Saturdays.

I feel your pain Nigel. It's embarrassing to have so many cretins souring the reputation of Portsmouth.

In contrast I was in Rome for the Italy v England Six Nations game the other weekend. Not one bit of trouble, England fans sat amongst Italian fans and all good natured and despite the quantities of beer being consumed.

Those football 'fans' are the main reason I don't go to games anymore.
