From today no cash fares on London buses

It's officially applied in the central area for a while, but starting today London buses are not accepting cash fares at all. The only way to travel will be with an Oyster payment, a day or longer pass, or a UK contactless credit card.

I can see where a day visitor may find this is an incovenience if they just need 1 ride. I appreciated the Oyster Card and like how I could keep it and just reload the card when I return.

I'm actually amazed that you can still pay with cash on NYC buses. You have to have a metro card for anything else, but they will take coins--and only coins--for bus fare. I wonder how much longer that will last.

Last month an 'overdraft' facility was added so that a final journey can be made with an Oyster card with any positive balance even if insufficient for the fare of £1.45. A warning rreceipt is issued.
