Hi. I'm trying to get routes, times, prices planned. We will be coming into London from Paris and immediately going to Cotswolds. I have used three different sites and either nothing comes up or they have disruption notices. Do the notices mean, since no routes come up, that I can not get to Moreton? I have tried different routes and the same comes up. Any suggestions would be great.
I'm not opposed to the thought of a car but Orbitz makes me rent from the airport, which we won't be at. And I would rather not get the car somewhere downtown London. Otherwise bus or train. Anything that will get me there :)
Thanks
I presume you mean Moreton-in-Marsh and when I google that all kinds of train time-tables come up.
Many train schedules are not yet published past about June 10, so try an earlier date to get an idea of schedule options. The DB makes it easy to print schedules for the whole route, but does not sell tickets for Britain (see tips and link at http://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/trains/online-schedules).
Yes that's where I mean. We travel in July but have been using April dates. Even if I were to use bahn and get the routes to come up I would still have to buy through nationalrail and that is where the problem lies because of the disruption notices
So really I guess I am needing to know just how much these notices affect travel. Should I wait and see if they change? Or do I need to change travel plans? They all say until further notice.
If you're coming from Paris on the Eurostar, you'll be arriving at St Pancras International Station. Trains to Moreton-in-Marsh leave from Paddington Station, so you'll need to travel on the underground between the two first of all.
I don't understand the problem you're having with the websites. The one you want is www.nationalrail.co.uk I can only see 3 disruption notices on that site: 1) between Exeter St Davids & Penzance (this is Devon/Cornwall); 2) between Tonbridge & Hastings (this is Kent/coast of Sussex) and 3) between Barmouth &Pwllheli (this is on the Welsh coast). None of these are within 100 miles of where you're going so don't worry about them. There are no disruptions showing on the route you need.
I've just had a quick look at various dates in March & April and they all show regular trains all day from Paddington to M-in-M, so I don't why you're finding nothing comes up. You can't actually buy from the National Rail site, but when you find the ticket you want, click on 'Buy Now' and it will take you to the Train Operating Company's own website - in this case First Great Western, where you buy the ticket.
Note that Moreton-in-Marsh is an intermediate station on the main London - Hereford line, so when you're in Paddington Station you'll need to look for Hereford on the destination boards, rather than M-in-M.
Thank you Rosemary!
There are no 'advance' tickets on this route, so you gain nothing in cash terms from buying online. However, some services, particularly the 15:52 can get very crowded, so a seat reservation might be advisable, although only some services on this route have them, depending on the type of train used on a particular service.
This route was affected by the February flooding south of Oxford and outside Maidenhead, which resulted in cancellations, and in most cases the trains were turned round at Oxford. However, that finished a couple of weeks ago or so.
The final destination of the train could be Hereford, Great Malvern or Worcester, as well as Moreton.
Leslie, As has been mentioned previously the Eurostar from Paris arrives at St Pancras International station. The train to Moreton-in-Marsh departs from Paddington station. If you are looking to rent a car, you could take the train to Oxford and rent your car there and drive to Moreton-in-Marsh. For car rental check out www.autoeurope.com or www.avis.com
We went to the Cotswolds this past September. We took the train from Paddington to Banbury which is practically in the Cotswolds. Enterprise has a location there. They picked us up at the train station; the whole process went smoothly. We then went to our b&b which was about 30-45 minutes away. It only took that long because it was our first time driving in England.
