Does anyone know if they do anything for birthday celebrations during afternoon tea? Like write Happy Birthday on a plate with a cake?
You can search the TripAdvisor reviews for mentions of "birthday"...seems to be a mixed bag whether the staff did something special or not: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g186338-d2690538-Reviews-The_Diamond_Jubilee_Tea_Salon-London_England.html
Don't know how large you group will be, but If a small group......I would recommend
Tea & Tattle - across the street from the British Museum. You can see photos and their menu

Thank you! I'll take a look at the trip advisor link. We are a small party of 4 and already have reservations at Fortnum & Mason, they have a child's tea menu and my 6 year old is one of party members.
Rick did at least one radio show podcast with a London Guide who specifically described Fortnum and Mason. It sounds really wonderful, and she said that one of her sons was young and they have lovely sofas where he fell asleep to the nice piano music :) They also said it's quite common for people to go out for a fancy tea for birthdays, it's common for birthdays and for when a guest comes to visit local people, so I'm sure they must have a birthday procedure. Perhaps emailing Fortnum and Mason could get the specific information to you.
Oh, here is the link to that podcast!

F&M is good for birthday celebrations; I've witnessed it. They make a big deal out of it. It's when you're on your own or with just one other person that the service is lackluster and for what they charge, that is unacceptable. We saw a family get feted by the staff while we constantly has to flag someone down to bring us more tea. So for birthdays, F&M would be a smart pick. Not sure we saw a cake with the words "happy birthday' if that is a priority.
