We will have 2 1/2 days and 3 nights in London in mid May of this year. Wondering for which sights/places advance tickets are a must? Can most be purchased on line?

Have a good trip!
If you hope to see a specific play, it would be prudent to buy the tickets in advance. Several I wanted to see were sold out by the time I checked for tickets last September.
Yes. Churchill War Rooms, Tower of London and as advised if there is a particular play that is a must see best to book in advance.
Churchill War Rooms, Harry Potter studios (book weeks or months ahead), major theatres (book weeks or months ahead), high profile temporary exhibitions at museums and art galleries.
War Rooms, Tower of London and Westminster Abbey w/ Queens Gallery.
I’d book in advance for the Houses of Parliament if that’s of interest. You’ll likely be able to buy tickets the same day but certain time slots might be sold out.
