For all you Yorkshire lovers...

I just found this in my email from PBS and thought it was a fun and charming look at some unusual customs in Yorkshire.

Forget the Ceremony of the Keys--find the Ripon Hornblower! This ear-splitting civic ritual comes alive every single night in the North Yorkshire city of Ripon—and has since 886 AD.

You can also read about Long Sword Dancing, the World Coal Carrying Championship in West Yorkshire, a Bed Race in Knaresborough, and planting the Penny Hedge in Whitby.

It's a short article so enjoy! https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/specialfeatures/all-creatures-great-and-small-6-curious-customs-from-yorkshire/

This was wonderful to read about mardee. So many different traditions- so unique! The world coal carrying one really looks hard! Thanks for sharing this! I’d love to be there for the Ripon Hornblower ritual. Since 886 AD 😳 wow.

The final, late afternoon, performance of the Good Friday ‘Pace Egging Play’ at Heptonstall is worth going to - funny, odd, dramatic, and by that stage, somewhat alcohol fuelled (cast AND audience!). Get there early as the tiny village gets absolutely swamped!

PS. I think there may be videos of past performances on You Tube.

Oh, those all look like so much fun. Sadly, none of them are in my time frame (story of my life). The Good Friday event is probably closest and I will be in Devon at that time. And the Whitby Goth festival looks like fun, too, but that's 10 days after I leave Yorkshire (sigh).

I have to admit that the rhubarb festival really caught my eye, wasleys. I love rhubarb! My mom had a rhubarb patch and we ate it all summer long. There is a rhubarb festival here in Duluth that I just found out about and want to go this summer.

Whit Friday is something I would love to go to again, but never remember. I would have been under 10 last time i went to a Whit March so remember very little. Sadly I will have been in Manchester 10 days earlier, on other business and can't really justify it again.

I hadn't heard about Shrove Tuesday in Scarborough. Not a day much marked in the UK, even less so in the shops this year due to Valentine's Day being the next day.

Mardee is also only just missing the start of the Well Dressing season in Derbyshire (begins at the start of May)- something else I have pencilled in for this summer- to go the Well Dressing in my home village. That is some time in July for me, exact date awaited.

Lots of excuses to come back.

Mardee,
Wow, great article! Thanks for posting this link.
So much to do and see!
I just bumped some things off my itinerary for England and added more time in Yorkshire.

I love rhubarb.
My Scottish grandmother made delicious rhubarb pies when I was a child.

Great article- thank you! Plus, I entered the sweepstakes :)

My husband and I will be in Yorkshire for 8 nights in Sept. as part of a three week trip to England. I happened upon the MemorySeekers YouTube channel and love their thoughtful and informative videos. I highly recommend them. There is a playlist on Yorkshire: https://youtu.be/C5tLdn2G9fU?si=q4RDUoQAWac-_NXx

Sara, I entered it too, lol! Thanks for the YouTube link—I will check that out!

Rebecca, I am serious when I say that I am really considering spending 3 to 6 months in Yorkshire. It would be so lovely and wonderful! Thanks for the PBS link! That had some good information.

And as long as we're all swapping links, here's one to make your mouth water—Sunday roast in Yorkshire! https://the-yorkshireman.com/north-york-moors-sunday-roast/
