Steve, Google London food blogs. I always read prior to my flights to London.

Always looking for something new to try and I find the blogs most helpful.

Emma has beaten me to it! The Golden Hind in Marylebone for fish and chips.

Roasts - Hawksmoor or Rowleys on Jermyn Street or any of the big hotels such as Claridges, the Savoy etc.

On the TimeOut list Emma posted, I can personally vouch for the Golden Union, Kerbisher and Malt, Hook, and Poppies. All are traditional chip shops except Hook (well, Kerbisher and Malt is maybe a modern take on a traditional shop) Hook is more new wave, different batters and seasonings.

I can also highly recommend the "Rock and Sole Plaice" a traditional shop, but with a wider variety of fish, one of the few, if only place that had Skate

Hi Steve:

One place where not to have fish and chips is the Cafe in the Crypt of St Martins in the Fields. I had dinner there about two months ago and ordered fish and chips. Unfortunately, the nice crispy fried batter hid the fact that the skin of the fish was not removed. I could tell by the taste that something was different. I had to separate the flesh from the skin which meant that a huge portion of the batter coating was left behind. Ugh! My fish and chip meals everywhere else were fine.

We actually had really delicious fish and chips at the cafe in the crypt of St Martin-in-the-Fields. Perhaps a different cook that day?

I would suggest you avoid fish and chips in pubs (some exceptions apply) and instead seek a dedicated establishment.

Since Chowhound has gone moribund, I use the website Hot Dinners for info on London restaurants, chefs, and food.

There is also good info on the websites of Time Out London and Londonist.

Hope you enjoy your time in London.

Poppies is wonderful! Like a '50s style American diner, but fried fish instead of burgers! Expect a wait.

Lol!! I appreciate all the advice. Should I ask a London cabbie to take me to the best Fish and Chippie place he knows? I hear they are experts in everything.
