Can anyone recommend a good food tour in London? We did one in Rome this last spring (Gourmetaly), and loved it. It was a bit of a splurge for us, but we've decided it's time to lighten up a bit, budget-wise. We're looking ahead to our trip next spring; we're doing the Villages of South England tour, but hope to spend a week or so in London seeing many of the places on our "must see" list that we didn't have time for on our Best of London tour! Thanks for your help.
I know London Walks do one, but not been on it yet, i have time to do it before you arrive though lol.
My personal feeling is that you may not need an organised tour.
London is choc full of back to back places to eat, of every cuisine on earth, just wandering about would let you sample every continent with little effort.
If you head to some of the food markets... Like Borough Market or the South Bank Food Market or into Spittalfields and Shoreditch, you are going to have 20-40 artisan food vendors in one place to try.
Not all are exceptional, but most are good and only a few quid (£3-£6) a dish, so not terribly expensive, especially if two share one dish.
Hygiene standards are mostly very high, but if it looks less than spotless, just move to the next stall.
Why not take a small map of the world and see how many counties you can tick off... There would be very few you couldn't find somewhere in London.
A good indoor choice is Westfield White City, 50-60 generally good food outlets and restarants in one place. Will cost a little more here as not food stalls, but an option if the weather is bad... Which it could be.
I've taken two tours offered by Celia Brooks over the years (Marylebone and Borough Market). She does an excellent tour. The Marylebone tour was offered through Divertimenti ( a cookware shop that also has cookery classes).
I thought I'd also add the link to the Divertimenti Cookery School as I see some of Celia's tours are on their schedule.
Mike J, Let me know if you do the London Walks food tour. Laura, thanks for the ideas and the link. We were taken to Borough Market very briefly on our last London tour, but it was literally a quick walk-through, and we didn't have time to go back. That sounds like a great way to spend a half day. We did make it to Portobello Road, and they too had lots of food stalls. Not as many, though.
Just as an alternative, you can do it yourself and likely have a much better time and save some money too.
London has a variety of markets filled wtith all varieties of food. You can do a different one everyday- or several in one day and literally sample food from around the world and London all in the same place. They are all easily accessible and you can go at your own pace sampling the foods you want to try.
Here is a link to some of the many markets:

In addition to markets, you can spend hours in Harrods in their food section, or go to any neighborhood to find ethnic restaurants.
Thanks, travelguy. I love the link.
I haven't gone on their tour, but after a lot of research had booked an "Eating London" food tour through the East End. Unfortunately had to cancel entire trip to U.K. They also have one through Soho. Gets great reviews. Check it out: eatinglondontours.co.uk.
Offering two tours in London one by day and one by night in different neighborhoods. I think you would enjoy these tours offered by Eating London Tours. I've taken the Soho tour before and really enjoyed this neighborhoods energy and food options.
The East End tour was excellent. In addition to enjoying some great food, you get a good appreciation for that part of the city. I'll try out Soho next time I'm in London.
