I noticed on RS tour of England they visit Stanton and go to a pub and hear folk music. Is this arranged just for his tour or is it a common occurrence in pubs in the Cotswolds?
It will vary considerably from pub to pub and day to day.
I've been in and out of pubs for donkeys' years and only hear anything live occasionally.
It will be well advertised on the outside of the pub likely if any.
England isn't Ireland.
You may catch some Morris Men if you are lucky.
oooh another Bellowhead fan!!! yay!
I first heard (saw) them on a fancy dress Christmas folk music outing on the BBC and have been crazy since. A little northeast clogging goes fine with me too.
I don't think you catch Bellowhead in many pubs these days.
Susan and Monte, you'll just have to go back to Scotland. :)
The Crown & Trumpet Inn, Broadway has regular jazz &/or Blues nights, (dates are listed on their website) http://www.cotswoldholidays.co.uk/default.asp?ID=173&Page=Crown and Trumpet. The Red Lion Chipping Campden (I think The Bakers Arms Broad Campden too but not sure of dates??) have Folk evenings which are usually accompanied by the local Morris Men! , - Red Lion = third Thursday of each month I believe.
Thanks! Maybe RS pays to have a folk band perform for his tours. Or, maybe it is the BBC with the Mike Harding Folk show!
"Today we'll take a scenic Cotswolds drive, stopping at the ever-so-English Cotswolds village of Stanton."
"Tonight we'll enjoy dinner together at a country pub with the sounds of local folk musicians, where you can try a sip of Scrumpy, the local farmhouse hard cider."
Oi!
Genuine British cider is nice. It is a bit of an acquired taste, though.
(If you want to try it without going into the country, try the Cider Tap outside Euston station in London)
In this case, the band is arranged as part of the tour, not a regular feature of that dinner location.
Hey, the band and the "sip of Scrumpy" sound fun to me!
I went on the RS tour at the end of May and I think the musicians were arranged by the tour guide. They were wonderful. And you'll have to have Stanway Bitters if you can find it. As a patron of the pub told me "Real people only drink Stanway!" Enjoy.
Local musicians can really vary, there is no doubt about that. But, at least in Scotland, they tend to quite enjoyable when in a pub. Sometimes the ones in hotel shows feel a wee bit less authentic, but I've heard great music in one of the harbor hotels in Kirkwall.
Monte, maybe you can find out if Rick's tour group will be there during your trip. You could probably horn in on the music. :)
