Flying into/out of london

Hello! My husband and I are traveling to Europe this summer and going from NYC-London-Barcelona. Airfare is $200+ cheaper per person to go into LGW. We are staying near Piccadilly Circus. Is LGW a pain to get to and not worth the savings? We have a short trip and will have luggage, want to keep it as enjoyable as possible.

Gatwick is easy to get to. "Gatwick Express" trains from London Victoria, or slower commuter trains from Victoria, St Pancras or Blackfriars. You are spoiled for choice.

Another attraction of Gatwick is immigration. We flew in from Malaga this afternoon and walked straight up to a Border Force agent without queuing. We've had short queues at Heathrow on occasion but these aren't the norm, my experience with Gatwick is that immigration is far quicker.

J.C.....you must have been lucky. The last time I flew into Gatwick, the line to use the machines was about 20 minutes. It was a zoo.

I guess Saturday lunchtime is a good time to aim for then.

The option with the fewest changes is the Gatwick Express or Southern Trains service to Victoria Station and take the No.38 bus to Piccadilly Circus or a taxi from Victoria as it’s not far.

Gatwick Airport is as easy (or difficult depending on your luck) as Heathrow. I have used Gatwick twice over the winter, both Thursday flights arriving back after 11pm. One time had no queue at passport control and the other took 20 minutes to get through.

Departing from Gatwick has been significantly speeded up over the past year as this section of the airport’s refurbishment has been completed.
