Flying into Heathrow on a Bank Holiday weekend…

Hello,

Just curious about anyone’s experience flying into London on or around the early May Bank Holiday. I’m trying to decide which day to fly in. I was originally thinking of leaving LAX on a Thursday (May 2, 2024)…but now I’m a little worried about arriving in London on that Friday. From a couple articles I’ve read it sounds like that could be a hectic travel day as people head out of town for the long weekend. Now I’m thinking of flying out on Saturday instead (May 4, 2024).
Any suggestions or experiences of travelling on that holiday weekend?

Thanks!

No experience flying on a bank holiday. Once we left Glasgow on a May bank holiday Monday. We were warned to make, and did make, reservations on the train we wanted to take to Stratford on Avon. We made seat reservations but those got messed up. We did, however, get a seat on the train which was very crowded. We had no problem with walking onto a train the Friday before from York to Glasgow.

Good to know about making a seat reservation...thanks for the heads up on that!

I’m not sure it makes much difference if you arrive Friday vs. Sunday.

The main thing to be aware of is that there are often engineering works on the tube or trains on bank holiday weekends. Check the planned works calendar before you arrive to know if there is any impact to you. You can find planned closures here. They are usually posted 6 months in advance. https://tfl.gov.uk/tube-dlr-overground/status/

Is London your final destination? I don’t think there would be a problem if it is, although follow the advice about checking work on the trains/underground. However, there could be issues if you’re connecting on to another destination. We ran into problems this year trying to connect through LHR to Paris with the bank holiday at the end of May coinciding with half-term. When flights were cancelled there were few alternatives as even the Eurostar was sold out that weekend.

Thanks for the insight...yes, London will be my final destination. So I'm thinking I should be okay to stick to my original plan....

Thanks!

if you arrive overnight from LaLaLand you will be coming in the early morning likely, and most everybody else will be leaving. I'd expect little problem early in the morning on the Friday. Do check, as suggested above, for what might be closed on the Tube and trains over the weekend.
