Flights to London from SFO

First time flying to UK. What airlines are the best from SFO to London? Are there airports near London that may be cheaper? Going in mid to end October.

Several airlines have nonstop flights to LHR. Of course the airlines apply algorithms on their pricing, so those can vary widely even day to day.

Even more airlines are possible if you choose to go with connecting flights. How much sitting on an airplane and in connecting airports for extra hours is worth it to you is something you have to decide. Personally, I'll take a direct flight any day. To see if alternate airports are available, select just London England without specifying the airport.

Have a look at Google Flights for options, and, If you want, set up price alerts for a while to see how prices are trending. But book directly with the airline.

We fly that route at least once or twice a year.
We prefer Virgin Atlantic nonstop to Heathrow. We also sometimes use United .
Usually we try and use miles but sometimes we use cash. Prices vary. Sometimes one is cheaper one time and vice versa.

We fly Premium Economy. Virgin is nicer for sure all around. But we have had good flights on United. Food has been hit or miss. There are others . We tried British Air one time but was unimpressed a number of years back. They are also often more expensive.

You're coming to the UK but don't say where you plan to go. If it's just London then obviously London is the place to fly to. Whilst flights in to London are likely, but not certainly, cheaper than flying elsewhere, it might still make more sense if a flight delivers you nearer where you want to be. Or it might make sense to get an open-jaw ticket flying into London and back from somewhere else or vice-versa.

Aer Lingus is a good suggestion for that as they fly to airports all over the UK and if flying back via Dublin, have the great advantage of US pre-clearance there rather than at your arrival back in SFO. You might for example choose to fly into London and back from Manchester, Glasgow or Edinburgh.

I fly SFO and my preferred airline is United--I seem to always get the 12:30 pm departure, non-stop, and that has me at Heathrow by 7 am and allows me pretty much a full day of exploring before jet lag strikes hard around 5 pm. I have not considered other airports as I am comfortable with Heathrow and the ease of getting to and from London via various transit options.

Ten years ago we loved Virgin Atlantic; we will be flying it again this September. But check schedules to see which airline's schedule is most convenient for you.

Check google flights for an idea on pricing. Doing just a random search in October. Non stop SFO to London is $605 on United, $621 on Virgin. Aer Lingus has a layover in Dublin and is $691, so no, forgoing the nonstop to connect thru a close major hub does not look to be better priced. We normally go thru SFO if we fly United.

Google Flights. Make sure you put NON STOP option. We did British Airways because it was less money. And we did it way in advance to get the better price. But any of the nonstop airlines others mentioned are good too

I've been flying that route once or twice a year for the last 3-4 years. I mostly fly United as I have their credit card. They have 2 or 3 non-stop flights SFO-LHR daily and I too generally choose the 12:30pm flight which gets me into London bright and early. I will be going again this September and this time I will be on the 4:30pm flight which still gets me into LHR by 10:30am.

I have no complaints flying United and I checked my notes - I wrote that I even liked the food!

I have once flown Air France, connecting through Paris, which was fine but I reached London in the afternoon, so "lost" half a day, especially with the flight delay from Paris-London. However, I enjoyed flying over London and being able to identify many of the famous landmarks from the air.

One option that almost always shows up cheapest on Google Flights is TAP Air, but I believe that includes an overnight layover in Lisbon at least one way. I have thought of doing that to get a "bonus" trip to Lisbon, but my vacation time has been limited and I have so far wanted to maximize my time in the UK....perhaps someday...

Have a wonderful trip to a great city!

I always fly out of SFO (living only an hour away). Fly direct to London Heathrow, as that is usually our first stop. We used to fly United or American, now prefer nonstop British Airways or Virgin Atlantic, depending on who has a better price for our dates (for our trip in late June it is British, in October it is Virgin. Go figure…). Tracking prices on google flights is helpful. Enjoy your trip!
