Airfares are surprisingly pricy from LHR to Rome. Any tips? After arriving in LHR in the morning has anyone tried taking the bus to Stansted and getting a cheaper Ryanair type flight from there to Rome? Do you rally have to allow 5 hours for the transfer?
We took RyanAir to Rome’s other airport, Ciampino ( CIA) which is closer to the city than FCO.
Can your ticket to LHR be changed without a fee? Maybe look at rebooking that to get you to Rome. The fare difference might be more than the sum of any alternates, but that could still be worth avoiding hassle.
No, sadly we booked an airline that does not fly to Rome. Probably in hind sight not the smartest move.
Bummer.
When you’re searching options on google flights plug in LON rather than LRH. The city code will yield all options, rather than limiting you the just heathrow.
If you want to go round to Stansted, yes allow 5 hours- 2 hours to get there, and 3 hours before at the airport (which also allows for any delays en route).
You can do it by bus- see this timetable-

but far more frequent is the train-
Elizabeth Line to Liverpool Street, then Stansted Express from Liverpool Street.
Each leg takes 50 minutes. Be aware that the through ticket costs £45.
But Elizabeth Line is £13, Stansted Express is £20.50. Buy both tickets on the spot (or Stansted Express can be purchased ahead of time for ease.
Are you no longer planning on Bath and York?
Do you rally have to allow 5 hours for the transfer?
I think that is the minimum. I’d want more time given the unreliability of airlines these days.
Do you have to fly to Rome on your day of arrival? It can be a financially risky proposition if your inbound flight is delayed. I often fly into London before continuing on, but I always spend at least a night there before heading to my next destination. Will you have checked baggage? On my last trip, I zipped through the egates for immigration but waited at least 45 minutes for my luggage.
Easyjet flies from Gatwick which somewhat closer to Heathrow than Stansted.
