Never been to London, going this fall. For a newbie who will be traveling alone, how do I get from Heathrow to Green Park Station?
It looks like the Piccadilly line goes straight there. You can use your contactless credit or debit card; remember to tap in at Heathrow, and out at Green Park. The estimated time is about 45 minutes.
That's how we're getting to Russell Square in a couple of weeks.
Have you taken public transport in a large US city before?
As noted you can take the London Underground Piccadilly line from Heathrow to Green Park.
At Heathrow the route to the Underground from your arrival terminal is well signed. The walk to immigration can be lengthy. Will depend on your arrival terminal. There all people movers. Simply remember walk on the left side. If you want you can stand on the right side, with your roller bag behind you. That way you can walk off the people mover safely.
Take your time no need to feel rushed.
Use a tap credit card to board the Piccadilly Underground train. Remember to tap out at Green Park.
If you think negotiating the Tube is too much then take a taxi. Not going to be inexpensive but won’t break the bank and more importantly will ease any angst.
Great city. Your tour will be informative and enjoyable.
Here's a YouTube video that shows that exact route (from 2019: https://youtu.be/nDgWhmhkfMQ) and this one is a decent overview of how to use the underground (https://youtu.be/sSHeo9yy0fg). Also determine ahead of time which exit at Green Park you will need to use to access your lodgings - ask your hotel or use this map https://www.streetsensation.co.uk/tube_station_exits/green_park_underground_station_exits.htm
My contactless Visa credit card worked great for tapping in and out, no need for an Oyster or Travel card. The CityMapper app on my phone worked great for helping navigate routes.
Have a great time!
This is very helpful. Also, does anyone know if the 7 days in London tour always uses the Washington Mayfair hotel?
mrya46: No, the RSE tour does use other hotels. When we took this tour some years ago, we stayed in Chelsea. We took it again this past February, and did indeed stay at the Washington Mayfair.
they will give you the name with your tour papers
Make sure to check the planned works calendar for the tube before you travel. There is at least one weekend this fall where the Piccadilly line has disruptions on the route to Heathrow. It can be found here:
https://tfl.gov.uk/status-updates/planned-track-closures
We were on the 6-4-23 B.o.L Tour and were at the Washington Mayfair. We found the Tube easy to navigate. We found there was always an employee at each tube station turnstile area to help get us where we needed to go. They were always nice and gave us all the time and help we needed. You will not need to get an Oyster card ahead of time as the RS guide will give you a prefilled £50.00 Oyster card that you will use to get around as a group and as needed on you own. We did a lot of tube riding and still had some money left over. Until then all you need to do is tap your credit card on the turnstile pad just as you would the Oyster card.
If you are staying at the Mayfair, when you arrive at the Green Park station, as with others, there are two exits. If you come up on the side of the road through the tube station, which backs up to Green Park you will need to cross the road, Piccadilly, to continue on to the hotel. If you come up through the stairway that is in the corner of the M & S Grocery store you are on the correct side of the street. If you use Google Maps street view this will be easy to see.
I echo what Laura said above. Check for any planned works. My wife and I flew into Heathrow for the 6/4 BOL Tour and the Piccadilly Line was down from Acton Town to Hyde Park Corner. We took the Elizabeth Line to Bond Street and then walked to our hotel, the aforementioned Washington Mayfair. It ended up being a min-walking tour! I also echo what Don (a fellow alum of that tour) said about Green Park Station. After a few rides on the Tube, like us, you'll be a veteran!
You might want to download the TFL Go app. You can double check that your planned route is still the best at the time you are ready to travel. Another app that works well in London is CityMapper. The apps generally pick up any disruptions.
The CityMapper app often has helpful tips such as which end to the train to ride or at larger stations which exit to take.
Have a fun trip!
