First day in Bath

In case anyone is interested…

Got off to an interesting start by having to stand the whole way from Paddington to Bath, lol. To say the 12:30pm from Paddington was packed would be an understatement - there was barely any breathing room.

But anyhow, the day would up being lot nicer weather wise than predicted. I walked to my hotel (Hotel Indigo - charming, and unique, with outstanding customer service). I had lunch in their brassiere, then checked out my room. They have different themes - I got Romance & Mystery, and I love it

I had a 4:30 booking at Thermae Baths -and it was just what I needed after a long day, I headed right for the rooftop pool. The water was probably slightly above bath water temperature, so it was perfect, I hung out there for almost 90 minutes / I could have stayed longer if not for having a dinner reservation and my hands being all pruned up, lol. The view is stunning, and it was cool hearing the church bells ringing.

I got to see some of Bath in walking to Thermae Baths, and it’s lovely. Tomorrow I have a guided tour of the Roman Baths & afternoon tea at the Pump Room. Later, I have an early dinner at The Scallop Shell as I’m seeing a show at the Theatre Royal!

Thanks for all of your help!

Betsy,
I'm going to apologise to you. I didn't know there was a Rugby Match on today at Bath, hence the packed train. What no-one could have known was that GWR in their infinite wisdom then provided a train half the length of what it would normally have been.
I've just looked it up as there had to be a reason for that happening on a Sunday.

Stuart, it’s not necessary at all! This was the train I wanted - and apparently GWR has been shortening all their trains on this line, so probably I’d have been out of luck no matter when I went

I was told at the hotel that there was a rugby natch - and how that could have affected things. I didn’t see anyone wearing jerseys, though, so maybe not?

Wonder if you could have got upgraded to the 1st class section?

The situation of having 5 coach trains operating on some London services is appalling. It is due to a train shortage because they really need new modern trains for their services that don’t go to London. To overcome this situation, from May GWR are going to start using for stopping services in Devon & Cornwall trains that are no longer needed by Transport for Wales. This will free some of the Inter City Express trains for London services.

Go into the street south of the Roman Baths and you will find a very good information centre with free maps. (The place is near an arch).

Glad you are enjoying the Hotel Indigo. We were very impressed when we stayed there earlier this year.

Hi Betsy

I love hearing about your travels. We stayed at Hotel Indigo and enjoyed it as well. We had tea at the Pump Room but our favorite afternoon tea on our month-long British Isles trip was also in Bath at the Royal Crescent Hotel! We also really enjoyed a day trip to Bradford on Avon and tea at The Bridge which is one of the oldest tea rooms in England.

Hi Katie!

Thank you!

I just had tea at the Pump Room today - loved it. Maybe I should try that if I can fit it in!

To continue my Bath report, I LOVED the Roman Baths. Sadly, I couldn’t finish it all since I had the reservation at the Pump Room, but I saw a good amount,

I ended up spending the next 2 or so hours in that area. It turned out that I banged my watch hard against something …and not only looked the battery, but knocked the face off kilter, lol. So I was lucky that there was a jewelers that also fixes watches - and got it taken care of. I checked out a few shops, shd went to Toppings Bookshop

Tonight it’s dinner at the Scallop Shell, & a show at the Theatre Royal
