Has anyone experience with taking a ferry to The Republic of Ireland? I'm under the impression that taking a car rented in England across and out of Great Britain is fraught with problems. Only just beginning to plan; open to suggestions. We have driven before in England, Wales, and Scotland, so we're over the traditional terrors. But the logistics of turning in one rental car, crossing as foot passengers, and then renting another car in Ireland seem so cumbersome. Is this really the only way? The Northern Ireland ferries are more out of the way for our tentative itinerary but not impossible.
It's the ONLY way.
Nobody will stop you from taking the car across, but damage and recovery in the RoI are on you if something goes wrong. Call any agency in Britain and you'll get the same answer. You void the insurance. Anything you hear to hear to the contrary from somebody not in the UK is bogus.
Holyhead works easily for a drop point and there are agencies near both ferryports in the RoI. The places in Scotland are problematic for drop points.
Like most things you can do it with some hire car companies at a cost. The regular hire contracts might not even cover you for any damage sustained on the ferry let alone in the Republic of Ireland.
