Family group from USA traveling to York for wedding

About 18 friends and family are traveling to York, England for our daughter's wedding. We will be there the weekend of June 24th, 2016. Does anyone have any ideas of what would be a good group activity to do in York, such as a tour or best places to visit. I've made a reservation at Betty's for all the ladies, but I'm looking for something all of us can do together. We want to make the most of our time there and none of us have been there before. Your recommendations would be appreciated.

We enjoyed our guided tour around the city, including time on the wall. With the size of your group, you might be able to have your own tour. We did the free tour where you just show up across from the main gate and meet the guide. We also walked the entire wall on our own, but that would depend on the abilities of your group. As I recall, you go up and down stairs a few times.

There are a number of ghost walks in the evening. Some are more historical in nature than others. I went on one that lasted a little over an hour. I'm not sure how true the stories are, but it's a good way to see many of the buildings. Really like York and the Minster's incredible. Enjoy your visit!

Make sure to check out the river cruise, it starts in the town and goes south into the countryside, it was enjoyable and a crew member explains the history of York and some of the famous people who have lived in York. I usually don't like "touristy things" but this was actually more like a Rick Steves back door experience and was quite good.

Sue,

A few thoughts that come to mind.....

  • Walking tour - the entire group could take one of the excellent local walking tours (check at the T.I.) to learn something of the interesting history of York.
  • Explore - the area called The Shambles used to be the area for butcher shops, and there are some interesting little shops and good restaurants in that area. Be sure to look for the memorial to Saint Margaret Clitherow (I believe it's around the area of No. 10 Shambles).
  • York Minster - those that are interested could visit the incredible Minster and perhaps sit in on an Evensong service or climb the circular staircase to the roof.
  • River cruise - as I recall there are cruise tours on the river. THIS is one website you can have a look at (interesting that they advertise "Hen parties").
  • Railway Museum - the guys in your group might enjoy visiting the very impressive Railway Museum (Free, as I recall). They have an incredible collection of trains, including the Mallard which broke a speed record for steam trains (I believe it's still in working condition).
  • Eden Camp - anyone interested in WW-II history could visit Eden Camp, which is near Malton (a short distance from York). It has won awards as a top tourist attraction.

Have a look at the RS England guidebook for other ideas.

You could hire a carriage on the North York Moors Railway, a preserved steam railway, one of the best, and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Maybe top it off with an onboard tea or cheese and wine while kicking back.
