Family friendly budget London accom--Pax Lodge maybe?

We want to bring the kids to the UK in May 2015--they will be 12 and 14 then. Hotel prices really stretch our budget, so we've been looking for alternates. I've never stayed in a hostel, but we have considered Pax Lodge (Girl Guide House) in Hampstead, which would be about #120/nt for the four of us, with shared bath. I wouldn't mind the shared bath so much at Guide House, because, well, they're mostly Girl Guides or their chaperones! I'm not comfortable having the kids in a separate room (unless it's something like a suite or a flat), and we'd need 3 beds (a double and 2 twins).

Are we likely to find anything else in or near that price range that would be clean/family friendly and fairly well located? A friend recommended Premier Inns, which look like good value. It would be great to have access to a kitchen, though, or at the least a small fridge and microwave, so we have the option to picnic or buy ready-meals. I looked a little at flats, but most of the ones that sleep four have two double beds. We'd be looking at 3 or 4 nights.

My husband and I have visited the UK twice, but not in about 15 years (funny how that coincides with the birth of our eldest...). In London, we previously stayed in Bloomsbury.

As to location, our list is fairly standard...the Tower, British Museum, Shakespeare's Globe...so as long as it's fairly close to efficient transport, I am open to most things as our home base.

First post, been lurking for a while...thank you for some great information and a friendly environment.

Joanne,

I'll suggest looking into No.63 on Bayswater Road. They do have some family rooms. May be a nudge above your mentioned budget, but it's a quiet, smaller place near the Tube & bus. The website will provide more info. Great breakfast that's included.

Have a look at the Hyde Park Hotel. They have kitchenettes and family rooms. Don't know about the bed set up - give them an email?

Also, the Lancaster Hall is all twin bedded, but i don't know about kitchen facilities.

Bayswater/Westbourne Grove is a fabulous location. Lots of exclusive shops, nice restaurants, and good transport options. From the Bayswater tube station you'll be right on the Circle line for access the museums of South Kensington and also around to Westminster and further on to Tower Hill. If you walk up to Queensway station, you'll be on the central line for a 2 minute ride to Oxford St and further to Holborn for the British Museum. Best of all, you can walk to Hyde Park and to Portobello Market on Saturday.

I live in the area so I'm slightly biased, but if you have any specific questions, fire away.

I would also recommend looking at VRBO and AirBnB
These are homes with extra rooms, some are stand alone apartments, houses, etc.
I have several friends who only stay in this type of lodging and find the prices can be much
lower. You can shop by price and location.
Most of them have photos of the rooms or apts. for rent.
You can stay 1 night or much longer.
I see several in the area of Kings Cross station and that is the area I usually stay in
I find all the public transportation I need right at Kings Cross.

Best of luck in your search for lodging.

check out the chain hotels. we stayed last time with our 4 kids at a hotel near paddington that was kind of dumpy, but typical of london if you cant spend big bucks. . . this time though i scored a DEAL at travel lodge kings cross location. for all 6 of us i had to get two rooms, but it still was cheaper with breakfast included in the "typical" london hotel. also, you have so much time that you can sign up for the chains emails and they will send you deals as they come out, mostly they are for the season you are in. another option is to stay in croydon, which is between gatwick airport and south london. it takes about 20 minutes, is clean and VERY accessible to the city, oh and CHEAP. you can stay at nice hotel in croydon for around $100.
chain hotels to look at:
Jurys Inn
Premier Inn- we stayed at one and it was super nice
Travel Lodge
Ibis, Mercure and whole bunch of other in their family of hotels
Hampton by Hilton (croydon)
some good sites to check also, hotels.com, booking.com, skyscanner.com

Hi JoAnne! My kids are close in age to yours and we leave for our trip later this month. We have rented an apartment in Bloomsbury and the price is quite reasonable. I will give you a review when we return! It might fit your needs for the London portion of your trip!

KSH that sounds really cool--Bloomsbury is a great location. I will watch for your review.

Sadly, we have had to shelve our trip for this year. My ds has a class trip that we have been forced to accommodate in our plans, so...not this year. :-( However, I wanted to take the time to say thank you to everyone who's been so generous and helpful. I have bookmarked the forum and the posts, and I hope to use your collective wisdom soon.

All the best,
JoAnne
