Exploring Jurassic Coast by Public transport

We're visiting the Jurassic Coast Sept. 17-20, 2024. We'll be arriving by train at Axminster and staying in Lime Regis. What is the best way to explore the coast to the east? What are some highlights we shouldn't miss?

It’s Lyme Regis.

FYI it’s hilly. Good stretching of calves and ham strings. Long beach to wander.

Lyme Regis Museum is small but extremely well done. Lots of fossils.

i enjoyed a lovely chat with locals in the small Nags Head pub. It’s across the road from St Michael’s/St Georges Catholic church where I lit a candle for my Mom.

If still open enjoyed shopping at Pug and Puffin pet store. Same with Rolly’s fudge.

Loved my fish and chips take away from Herbies.

Enjoyed my pot of tea at the Black Dog tea room but my piece of cake was dry.

I had a car and stayed at an Air BnB. Unfortunately the owners ceased their Air BnB.

I haven't been to Lyme Regis but I hope to get there some day--I just finished reading Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier, an excellent fictionalized account of the life of Mary Anning; she made many important fossil discoveries in the early 1800s and her house is now the Lyme Regis Museum. There is a statue of her, complete with her hammer for dislodging fossils and her trusty dog, Tray, at the shore, and you can also visit her gravesite. I guess I know where I would start--and then spend lots of time poking along the shore as ammonites and other interesting things are still being found there.

Presumably you are taking the bus X51 (15 minutes past the odd hours) or X53 (15 minutes past the even hours) from Axminster to Lyme Regis.

They are double deck buses.

Both buses then continue along the coast to Bridport. From there the X51 continues along the coast to Weymouth, but the X53 goes inland to Dorchester then Weymouth.

But at the same time as the X53 leaves Bridport for Dorchester an open top bus, the X52 leaves to go along the coast to Weymouth.

So it is an hourly bus along the coast basically.

From Weymouth there is another double deck bus, the X54 to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door every two hours. And an Open Top Bus - the Portland Coaster over to the Isle of Portland.

So all those buses make it easy to do one way walks along the South West Coastal Path.

All the buses cost £2 a ride. Or there is a 7 day ticket for unlimited travel for £27.

PS- I was expecting others to mention the Abbotsbury Swannery and Sub Tropical Gardens.

Bridport has a market every Wednesday and Saturday and is well known for it's rope and hat making.

By the way the X52 open top bus has just finished for the season. I've been on the X51 today, and there was a lot of confusion at Bridport as it is still being advertised there. The X51 and X53 are still running, to the same timetable as before.
