Heritage Open Days is held annually around England (London and Scotland do similar schemes, but on different dates) - this year between 8 and 17 September- https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/visiting

It is a great chance to visit places which are either normally closed to the public, or which normally charge you.

In Cumbria there are too many places to list but they include-
Sizergh Gunpowder Mills (there was once a concentration of gunpower works in what was then Westmorland and Lancashire north of the Sands, a largely forgotten piece of history);
Warwick Bridge Corn Mill (near Carlisle)
Gleaston Water Mill and Newland Charcoal Iron Furnace (both near Ulverston)
Hawkshead Grammar School Museum Library (where William Wordsworth was schooled)- the Museum is always open, but the Library hardly ever
Barrow in Furness Town Hall and St James' Church. - Barrow in Furness grew so rapidly in the 1860's and 1870's that four new Churches named after the Evangelists were dedicated on the same day in 1878- believed to be a unique event.

Appleby in Furness- the Moot Hall, Lady Anne's Alms houses and The Colourists Home (where artists pigments have been made since the 17th century); there is also Appleby Castle (not in the scheme, but now open daily for the first time in many years)

In 2022 the programme was severely curtailed as it was the weekend after the Queen died, so there were many last minute cancellations.
