Evacuation Insurance

Don't know which category to ask this question in. Husband and I are heading to England for 2 weeks. For quite a number of years, we bought trip insurance through Insuremytrip.com. Then we decided that the cost we were most concerned with was being evacuated if that would occur, so we purchased Medjet insurance for evacuation. Well, just a couple weeks ago my husband I turned 75. It's a whole new situation when you reach that age. The prices at least triple. Do any of you who are 75 or older purchase evacuation insurance (or insurance that covers evacuation) at what you would consider a reasonable price and that you recommend? Sure does suggest it's good to travel when you're young!

We are currently looking at the insurance program offered by United Mileage Plus credit card (I believe it is $189 per year for a couple) but the detailed information has not arrived yet.
Chase Sapphire Reserve card seems to have medical evacuation/ repatriation of remains insurance included for trips paid for with the card.

If you’re a member of AARP, there’s a $55 discount on the Medjet Diamond annual plan, for the 75+ group. Were you counting that in? But if you only take one trip per year it’s a shame to only be able to purchase the annual plan.

I've used Travel Guard Medevac plan in the past. I see for a 75 YO, 11-22 day trip is $123. Click on the coverage and pricing links.

Travel Guard has now "hidden" the links to the Medevac plan when you go to their retail site. They only want to sell full trip insurance as it is much more profitable. The link above gets you in.

I purchase this insurance for our overseas travels through American Express. Not sure if over 75 is more costly?

You can also use the insuremytrip portal seaching for "medical" plan type to get to an AIG's MedEvac plan and others quotations. An "evacuation" plan type serach will regurn Medjet plans.

Sharon,

Be sure to read the fine print. Some policies will only evacuate you to the nearest facility that can treat you. Others will, if you are hospitalized, return you to your home area. The devil is always in the details.

Recent AiG MedEvac policy "fine print" regarding evacualtion:

Emergency Evacuation - means:

(a) Transportation from the place where the Insured is Injured or sick
to the nearest adequate licensed medical facility where appropriate
medical treatment can be obtained; and/or

(b) Transportation from a local medical facility to the nearest
adequate licensed medical facility to obtain appropriate medical
treatment if the onsite attending Physician certifies that additional
Medically Necessary treatment is needed but not locally available; and
the Insured is medically able to travel; and/or

(c) Transportation to the adequate licensed medical facility nearest
the Insured’s home to obtain further medical treatment or to recover,
after being treated at a local licensed medical facility, and the
onsite attending Physician determines that the Insured is medically
able to be transported; or

(d) Transportation from an adequate licensed medical facility to an
adequate licensed medical facility of the Insured’s choice for further
Medically Necessary treatment if the onsite attending Physician
certifies that the Insured is medically able to travel.

Item "d" is the potential big ticket item. My former boss suffered a tramatic head injury in France and had to be evaculated vis charter get from France back to the US for long term rehabilitation at a 24 hour care faility.
