ETA fee may go up to £16

If you've been holding off getting an ETA because you're not traveling until later in the year, you might want to reconsider.

The Home Office has apparently decided they should be charging more - legislation was introduced into Parliament this week proposes setting the maximum fee for an ETA at £16, up from £10.

It's not set in stone - the announcement mentions "the flexibility to increase the maximum fee", but it indicates a general plan to charge more.

This legislation is subject to a debate and a vote, and the fee increases will require further enabling legislation.

It’s £6. The price of a West End pint. Not really a deal breaker in the context of trip.

I’ve bumped up our application date for our May/June trip. We will be applying this week. Planning is coming along nicely. Thanks for the info and link, Simon.

Thanks for sharing this Simon. It's a good point, I think I will go ahead and apply.

No, 6£ isn't going to break the bank. But why hand over more than one needs to? I'd rather use the 6£ on something fun.

Nowhere does it say prices are going up. What the new legislation says is that the government has the right to raise the fee for numerous immigration "products" if they want to.

I did say "may" go up, not "will" go up. But the generally commentary I've read, and the fact the Home Office announcement quantifies the extra revenue, suggests its likely it will increase.

The full text about a potential increase is this;

“As with all our fees the cost of an ETA is kept under review, and we intend to increase the cost of an ETA to £16 in the future. We will provide more information in due course about when the cost will increase.”

So there is no immediate increase planned and they intend to inform the public about the increase beforehand.

Thanks Simon. I was going to wait until Spring to get the ETA for Summer. But will apply this week. No reason to procrastinate; one more thing to check off my to-do list.
