Escaped 'spy' recaptured in West London

Tourists now in London will be able to worry a bit less and have fewer police helicopters and special activities now that the escaped terror suspect and spy has been recaptured peaceably in West London after his escape three days ago.

I wonder if the recapture would have been so peaceable in some other countries of the world.

Met on Friday - “he may well have already left the country”. Saturday - arrested in Chiswick! It’s a bit un-exotic isn’t it?!!

Glad nobody appears to have been hurt through the entire episode though.

it does mean that traffic to the ports and people at the airports will now have a slightly easier time with less detailed searching

Not exactly a James Bond movie is it? And a far cry from The Third Man.

Just reading the updated news. The Met Police now say that he was detained in Northolt (not Chiswick as they originally reported), on the canal towpath, by a plain clothes officer while he, the suspect, was riding a bicycle.

I read about his escape - good to know he's been caught!

I don't know about other countries but it does happen occasionally in the US and they're usually caught pretty quickly and without too much fuss. 😊 My assumption is that most of these escapees probably aren't all that smart, so it doesn't take much to recapture them.

OK- For those who want to be pedantic- he is accused of trying to spy for an enemy state (thought to be Iran), of obtaining information likely to be useful to a person planning an act of terrorism, and of plotting a fake bomb hoax. All this while he was in the British Army.

He had been remanded in jail (in January, awaiting trial in November), after being denied bail, as these are pretty serious charges and he was clearly seen by the state as a danger to the public.

As an aside he had escaped from Wandsworth prison, where Ronnie Biggs (the great train robber) escaped from in 1965.

A lot of people like to romanticise his crimes as well.

I’ve been in London since the initial escape news broke and as a tourist I was never worried and I never saw any police helicopters or special activities.

I am far more worried about the excessive heat and humidity here. 90 degrees Farenheit with 77% humidity is pretty unpleasant. I hope it breaks soon.

At least we have peace of mind that one criminal is off the streets. Now for the rest of them.

'tis warm. There's a band of rain coming in from the west as we speak but London's not going to see much of it. I don't think the rain will freshen the air much with these temperatures. Might get some thunderstorms on the south coast.

It's been a few degrees shy of 90F here too. But supposed to go back to mid-70's in a few days. I found it feels cooler when I look at C temperatures.
