English wedding

Help! 2 southern California girls coming over in mid-January for a wedding. What do we wear, what DON'T we wear?

Thanks!

Age? Am I correct in assuming 20-30 age range? If so, Google Duchess of Cambridge or her sister, Pippa Middleton and look for pictures of them at weddings. That will give you some ideas. One of my favorite things when in the UK is to watch guests gather for a wedding as they really dress up. In the US, the trend for 20-30 age range that I've seen lately is closer to what I think is worn out to a nightclub.

Thanks everybody, your help is very much appreciated! Btw, it's an early afternoon wedding at a manor house out in the country.

Definitely a dress, a cocktail-style dress, just above or below the knee that is much dressier than what people generally wear in the US. Advice about checking the Middletons is a really good idea, even though it made me chuckle. Heels, strappy if possible, small elegant clutch purse, and a lovely wrap (in addition to your coat) as it will likely be drafty at times, particularly coming from SoCal. Hats are still pretty popular, at least, there have been lots at the weddings I have been to. But more like the fascinators, or what I think of as 'essence of hat'. Go with a lovely head ornament and you will feel dressed appropriately. If you are there for the whole wedding, it is a long event...much longer than a US wedding. Enjoy!

I dream of being invited to an English wedding just so I have an excuse to buy a fascinator! You must wear one since you'll probably not get another chance!

In all my puff, I never thought I'd see a plug for Sam Cam on this website.

Live and learn.
