We will be in England/Wales in May 2022. Trying to determine the best itinerary. Overwhelming!!! I thought 30 days would be plenty of time. Any suggestions?
I can suggest a great itinerary that I would love to do, mainly focussed on bird watching. This may not be if interest to you, so if you could give us a few hints as to what you want to see and do, how many “we” are, mode of transport, interests etc, we can give you some pointers, hopefully.
Does 30 itinerary mean 30 days/nights? Have you been before?
Are you in and out of Heathrow?
Thanks
You have left it a bit tight to start thinking about a 30 day itinerary for three months time...
Get a good guide book with lots of pictures - suggest DY Eyewitness Great Britain - and start reading. How are you planning to get around - train, hire car etc? Where are you arriving? London?
Allow 3-4 days per base and allow plenty of time for driving between places. Distances may not look great on a map but will take a lot longer to cover than you might expect. If using Google maps then allow +25% on the driving times they give and then add on time for stops...
What sort of things do you want to do/see when you are here? It is difficult to know where to begin as what I like doing may be completely different to what you like... and there are som many different options too!
- York, North York Moors, Durham, Northumberland, Lake District, North Wales...
- Cotswolds, South Wales, Devon and Cornwall...
- London, Cambridge, East Anglia (Sussex and Norfolk), Lincolnshire, Stratford upon Avon, Welsh Borders and mid Wales...
- South east, south coast, New Forest, Bath, Wye Valley and Forest of Dean, South Wales...
Plan a rough route covering the places you have identified and hope you can find accommodation. May is beginning to get busy as schools are on half term holidays at the end of the month and there are also the Queen's Jubilee celebrations at the start of June. Everyone may be taking an extended holiday over the last week of the month.
We did a four week drive tour of England and Wales, skipping large cities. Largest cities we visited were York and Cardiff.
Here is my detailed review of our trip. Recommend Tenby in S. Wales and visiting St. David's.

Some tips, try to keep your driving limit to no more than 2 hours a day.
Rent an automatic transmission if you aren't used to driving on the left.
Be sure to have a nav system on your vehicle or have access to Google Maps or similar navigation.
We stayed in B&Bs or small hotels centrally located so we didn't need to use the car while staying in a city or town.
