England’s free, Charles III Coastal Path

I was able to open the link. I've spent two 1-week hiking holidays with Ramblers over the years (one in Austria, one in Ireland). Looking forward to walking this beautiful footpath!

Wales also has a Coast Path. However, as with the one in England, I would be selective about the sections you hike and check them out on Google maps. Some section of the Wales Coast path Google have actually walked and loaded via Streetview. Aim for the more scenic sections and certainly avoid those that go through industrial areas.

I am really excited about this one- particularly as once we finish the South Downs Way we will have completed all the National Trails within day trip distance of London- this opens up some nice new options.

Unfortunately I couldn't read it as it was behind a paywall so I don't know what happened there.

The coastal path around Portsea Island has now been completed and it's quite a nice improvement on what was there previously.

The answer is that nothing much has happened, as the path is still incomplete. Sections are opening all the time, and it is absolutely opening up the coast.
In Cumbria a new section has recently opened between Green Road Station (Millom) and Greenodd.

So we now have from the Scottish Border at Gretna to Greenodd open, a very sizeable stretch.

What is sometimes odd is the routeing- to achieve Accessibility and obtain land rights the path is sometimes inland. There is a stretch near me where there always had been a path, but the National Trail is inland of that. The old route still exists. Even more oddly the new route is a lot more strenuous than the old one!!

And the route already exists for many miles beyond Greenodd (I've walked it), but is not up to National Trail standards.

None of that is to decry what a huge achievement this will eventually be, and in many places already is.

You need to have a free account on the New York Times and be logged into it to see it. It's worth creating one as there's often quite good features writing there for free I've found.
