England Rail strike September 22, 2024 transportation options

We need to get from the Rolleston Newark Northgate area back to the Washington Mayfair tour hotel on September 22, 2024, when rail travel will be unavailable due to a strike or engineering work closing the lines. Does anyone have any alternate transportation suggestions? We're open to just about anything to get to the hotel, short of hopping on someone's hay wagon.

Exactly what route are you planning? Strike action is only affecting LNER trains on the east coast mainline, and unless I'm missing something, won't affect you. And even on LNER, it doesn't mean trains won't run- they're saying they will operate trains, but on a reduced timetable.

There are extensive engineering works planned, but again not all of it may affect you. And if they do, rail replacement buses will run.

If you can clarify which route and which operator you plan to use, we can advise.

And re actually getting to your hotel once back in London, the tube is not affected by either.

Thank you so much for clarifying this. We were given info about the strike from those with whom we are staying in Rolleston, along with the need to plan alternate transport. Route was Newark Newgate station to somewhere near the Washington Mayfair (tour) hotel. We were affected by a rail strike last year which totally messed up our schedule & resulted in a very expensive taxi ride. Once bitten, twice shy. I'll pass this info along to them & all our worry may be for naught. These plans are not part of the tour but are for afterwards.

This will be on LNER from Newark Northgate. Timetables for the first strike day will be published hopefully by next weekend so it will be possible to judge what effect this will have.

The scheduled engineering works are north of Newcastle, so will not affect services that far south.

There are also East Midlands trains from Rolleston Station to Nottingham at 0936, 1200, 1514 and 1711 where you could pick up an East Midlands train to London St Pancras.

They are not affected by the strike.

EDIT- That would be a good idea except that EMT have engineering work that day between Bedford and Luton with bus replacements. But there are also regular bus (coach) services run by National Express (hourly, all call at Marble Arch), Flixbus and Megabus from Nottingham to London.

National Express also have a bus from Lincoln at 0850 to London Victoria, via Nottingham Broadmarsh Bus Station at 1015 which calls at Marble Arch- within walking distance of your hotel. The bus fares currently start at £8.90 for the 3 hour 15 minute ride.

LNER have now confirmed their timetable for next Sunday, 1 September.

From Newark Northgate departures to London Kings Cross are at 0905, 1010, 1105, 1259, 1459, 1600, 1710, 1908 and 2041.

So assume a broadly similar service on 22 September, thus you will get to London- exact times to be confirmed in 3 weeks time.

Thank you for this update. We may have to wait until we're in the UK closer to that date to figure out how to travel.
