Booked a trip to England in October for myself and my husband (It's a 9 day trip including travel). We have always wanted to visit Oxford. We are big Lewis and Tolkien fans. We were thinking Hotel in London and Airbnb in Oxford and staying in each for a few days. Those with experience, do you think we have time to visit anywhere else? We are very active on Euro trips but at the same time don't want to rush through places we won't get to visit often. Also, Would you recommend renting a car? This seems unneccesary for London and Oxford but let's say we have time for the Coswalts would you recommend it for a portion of the trip? TIA for help.
I think you can easily fill 9 days with just London and Oxford but it is possible to see more if that is your preference.
From Oxford, I visited the Cotswolds without a car. I did a day tour with Go Cotswolds. I took the train from Oxford to Moreton-in-Marsh where they pick you up for a small group tour. You would need to book this in advance if you choose to do this. I thought the tour was worthwhile.
From Oxford you can also visit Blenheim Palace, which is terrific.
You don’t want a car in London or Oxford. If you want to see the Cotswolds, a tour might be easier than renting a car for a single day. There are buses from Oxford to Blenheim.
If you really want to visit some other place it is perfectly doable, but you can easily fill 9 days with just London and Oxford.
There are some good B&Bs in Oxford as well that you can consider. And as mentioned, a car is a waste of money and sanity.
Ah yes! I'd love to hear BnB suggestions and thank you for the car tip :)
Unfortunately my favourite B&B in Oxford closed during the pandemic, but there are many other to choose from. Not sure I can give any recommendations though.
We did a similar trip last June with my 8 year old daughter, London then Oxford. here's the Airbnb we booked for Oxford, maybe a little big for your needs but the location was nice (short walk to bus, train, stores, and various colleges) and it was pretty convenient. Outside of walking around Oxford, we took the bus to Blenheim (S3 and S7) for a day, and then did an e-bike tour around the Cotswolds starting from Kingham to get out into the countryside for a day. The stop in Stow-on-Wold was fun with the church door that is rumored to be inspiration for Lord of the Rings.
