England for 11 Days/10 night Itinerary ideas

We get off a Cruise ship in Southampton on July 26. and plan to get a rental car We have 10 nights to drive around England. We have been to London several times so thinking we will do other areas in England/Wales. Also did 21 days last year in Scotland and Ireland so want to focus on England and Wales this trip. Thinking we will get a rental car and head Salisbury or bath for the first night and stop and see Stonehenge on they way. Below are some cities we are thinking a spending a night or two. Would love feedback and thoughts on a 10 day itinerary ending at Heathrow airport. I am got the ideas below from Rick Steves guide books would love thoughts that might be a better agenda.

We like history and all the sites. Love more authentic area and not touristy. Love to get a feel for local life and the local pubs.

Here is a sample
1 night in Salisbury OR go straight to Bath???
2 nights in Bath
2 nights Chipping Campedin
1 Night Liverpool
1 night Iron Gorge - Do I need a overnight here???
1 night either Kenwick is one night enough or better to skip with our timing???
2 nights York
1 night near Heathrow or other thoughts to catch plan the next morning to fly home

We would lover your thoughts and again very open to ideas different from what is listed above. We were in Portugal in Aprkl and got great input from this forum that cause us to change or plans based on the feedback we received. So glad we got that help it made for a great trip.

Thanks Linda and John

London is always worth another visit. What about staying n London that last night? How early do you need to be at Heathrow the next morning? A quick trip via the Heathrow Express (get discounted tickets Online ASAP) or by Tube (Elizabeth line or Piccadilly Line, depending on where you stay) will allow you to enjoy London, if there’s time.

Most of the places you list are touristy, especially in summer, but worth visiting.

Assuming you meant Ironbridge Gorge, whether you spend a night depends on what you want to see and what time you arrive in town. We stayed a night because we arrived in town late afternoon. The bridge can be seen in a hour. Nearby is Blists Hill Victorian Town. That would take some time to visit. There’s also the Jackfield Tile Museum.

If you meant Cheddar Gorge, a short stop in town and drive through the gorge should be sufficient. We did it as part of a day trip from Bath.

If you have time, Salisbury has an interesting little museum.

The Ironbridge gorge fits between the Cotswolds and Liverpool.not afterwards.

Then Keswick (Kenwick)- to maximise your time there come off the M6 at exit 36, then the A591 up to Keswick, a 3 hour drive from Liverpool, then leave to York on the A66.

But you say you don't want too touristy but do Bath, the Cotswolds, the Lake District and York in peak season.
Keswick in August is going to be tourist Central as is York.
We do have history at Keswick, but if you are looking for Industrial Archaeology History Keswick may not be the best place to be staying. Somewhere further south in the Lake District might suit you better.
Possibly even Kendal. You could then go on to Penrith for the A66 over Kirkstone Pass for your Lake District scenery.
Grasmere is a lot less touristy, and maybe more "authentic" than Keswick.
You could then take the short cut to the A66 through St John's in the Vale.
If you did that you could overnight at The Swan, Grasmere or the Kings Head, Thirlspot.
For a one night in August in the Lake District you need to be booking fast (that applies to the whole itinerary except Liverpool).
If you robbed Ironbridge of it's 1 night stay you could give an extra night to the Lake District, both to maximise time here, and to make finding somewhere to stay easier.

Good plan, but I would suggest skipping Liverpool and visit Strataford Upon Avon and Warwick.

In Bath, consider dining at The Scallop Shell for the best fish and chips in England.

In Chipping Campden, we loved The Volunteer Inn.

If Ironbridge is important to you (and it would very much be to me) then you will definitely need a night there. Trying to fit it in to a day travelling from Chipping Camden to Liverpool will give you very little time for a location that can easily fill a day.

Contrary to the post above I would only want to add Stratford-on-Avon if I was a real Shakespeare geek and Warwick if I had younger kids for Warwick Castle, which has theme park like entertainment. I wouldn't drop Liverpool for either.

My honest opinion would be to drop the Cotswolds altogether in favour of fitting in Chester on the way to Liverpool.

I think your idea of Liverpool is great as it's a wonderful city, but I agree with John above that a visit to nearby Chester, which is a charming and lovely walled town, would be very worthwhile. You would need at least 2 nights in Liverpool for that.

And I understand your desire to see a lot, but spending 1-2 nights in a place is going to feel very rushed. Have you considered spending 4 nights in Bath? Then you could take some day trips to Stonehenge, Salisbury and even the Cotswolds. After that, head up to Liverpool for 2 nights, which gives you time to see the sights around there (including Chester). And then, as isn31c mentioned, drive up to Grassington in the Yorkshire Dales, which is a charming village and makes a good base to see the area around there. Spend 2 nights there and then the 2 nights in York.

If your flight is in the morning, I would recommend spending the last night at an airport hotel. I was in England for around 40 days in the spring this year, and spent by last night at the Holiday Inn Express, located at Terminal 4. So check to see what terminal you are flying out of and we can give you some recommendations for hotels at Heathrow.

If you were to do as Mardee suggests and do day trips from Bath then I wouldn’t stay in Bath itself. Traffic is always a problem. You could stay somewhere like Bradford on Avon and drive to those places more easily, then do trips into Bath by train.

Bradford on Avon is a pretty town and definitely not a major tourist destination.

Agree with Mardee about spending 4 nights in Bath or the immediate area and doing day trips from there. Depending on arrival and departure times, two nights in any place will only give you one full day and parts of two others at that location. Just something to think about.

Do you like to hike? Or need a day in the countryside de-compressing? Then Keswick is for you. On the other hand, if you require lots of indoor options, or historic built sites,(although Castlerigg Stone Circle is wonderful!), maybe visit Hawkshead or Grasmere instead in the Lakes. We absolutely love Keswick, but in August, it is crowded, and you'll want to book a room early.
