england and scotland 3 weeks october

We have booked to go to England and Scotland starting Sept 30 this year. we are planning only a day or so in
london as we have been before, before heading up to scotland for 6-7 days, ( Edinburgh and/or Glasgow, highlands and a loch but not really sure) then back through the lakes district, Liverpool probably, Oxford or Cambridge (and Rutland which I have read about), perhaps Devon and/or Cornwall, Bath ....however we are really unsure and confused at present. We are from Sydney Australia so used to large distances and open roads so I am finding the distances confusing.
We are interested in beautiful countryside, art especially modern and contemporary but all art really, history, particularly roman and tudor, good food and getting away from the usual tourist traps.
We like bed and breakfast or pubs /small hotels or some self catering cottages or apartments and are on a moderate budget as the $A is not so good at the moment...about 75 pounds a night if possible.

thanks in advance for any tips for an itinerary and or places to see and stay

Might be best to fly straight to Scotland (from Heathrow if that's where you're arriving) and skip London at the beginning.

As to everywhere else, though distances aren't great as in Australia it's still time consuming to travel from one end of the country to another. To do Scotland then head to Cornwall is a long way. What about more in northern England - Northumberland (Hadrian's Wall), Yorkshire then down to Cambridge - why Rutland?

Don't make the mistake of applying the same logic of driving in Australia to driving in the UK, they may look like "small" distances in comparison to your home country BUT because of our congested roads, roadworks, accidents, etc they can take a lot longer to cover. BTW, it's the Lake District (no "s").
