Emergency Recommendations for London on Sunday night and early Monday morning.

Hi everyone. I have a special request. Due to unfortunate circumstances, I missed my flight and would like your help on what do do with 1 night (Sunday) and 1 morning (until 10am) in London. I'm staying near Pancras station.

  • Sim card for my GSM phone that will work in London and Paris that isn't > $40 with at least 3 gigs of data. Reason is that we'd like to use Uber app to call car from Heathrow and various last last minute travel.
  • Family dinner recommendations - something an 8 year old girl would like.
  • Best time and place to watch the changing of the guard at Buckingham palace @ 11am Monday. Will it be crowded?

This sounds like you’re inquiring about this Sunday and Monday (11/19 - 11/20) and you are still in LA?

If you really need cell service upon landing at LHR have you looked at options from your US provider just to get you through until you get a local SIM? In London I would suggest Carphone warehouse or a Vodafone shop to see if they have plans that will meet your requirements. Check to see if they are open on Sunday.

As far as Uber, a possible alternative is to prebook a Minicab. I believe they can meet you just outside the secure area as you exit passport control, customs. The ones that seem to come up all the time are just airports, blackberry cars. You can search here.. Just airports seems to be open 24/7 so you can call to book now. Just use a VoIP service like Skype or google hangouts etc. Please note that I have never
used any these Minicabs but many forum members have.

What does your 8 year old like to eat?

Good luck and have a fun trip.

Hi Rocket,
I'm still in Los Angeles headed out tonight. Thank you for the advice. My kid is a bit picky so doesn't like her veggies and likes her deep fried food like chicken and calamari. I'm thinking about taking her to a place called Nando's Chicken which is close by but now sure if she can handle the spice.

I’m not familiar with the restaurants in that area so hopefully others will chime in. I would ask at the Hotel about a nice local fish and chip place?

Instead of changing of the guard ( and yes it's always crowded) take the 8 year old to the Horse Guards and watch them mount up and ride up the Mall to the Palace. Far more enjoyable.

Changing of the Guard is overrated and to get a good view you need to waste valuable time arriving early.

Since you are staying by St Pancras walk into the station to see the towering statue and the Christmas tree.

Finally there isn't a child who doesn't like the water fowl at the round pond in Hyde Park. Could walk from there to Princess Diana's Playground.

Much chillier than the Land of La ( i live in the megalopolis as well ) so no flip flops. I'm here now and love having gloves and winter hat.

Winter Wonderland opened last night. Open from 10 am to 10 pm daily. It's free. In Hyde Park near Mrble Arch. Fun for all.

Enjoy your journey....

The ever popular Nando's offers differing levels of spice, from 'nothing at all' to ' searingly hot'. My 10 year old will quite happily eat a medium spiced Nando's and he is quite picky about spiciness.

Thank you JC on the Nado's advice. Now I don't have to worry about dinner the first night
