Egates outage

On Tuesday night, all airport egates throughout the UK went down for just over four hours. It was a technical problem.

However, it caused hours of delays processing people entering the UK.

So, when people ask how long it will take to get through passport control, don't always assume the egates will work.

Even if they are up and running, they may not work for everyone. I had an issue last year where the info the airline reported to the UK was different that what was on my passport. I had to go through a quicker line but still added a bit to my time.

Ouch! I have always had great experiences with LHR’s gates - thanks for the heads up. I will keep in mind that the past doesn’t always predict the future on my next visit!

Those were the days, before e-gates, when it would routinely take 1-2 hours to clear passport control.

Happened to us two weeks ago on the Eurostar. The train departure was delayed by a little over an hour. We were very pleasantly surprised to receive within 24 hours an email with instructions for how to request a partial refund (amount was based on overall delay time). A quick google search will show egate delays are a periodic issue in the UK.

Robert, thanks for your info. I’ve had all on time Eurostars - as above, good to know not guaranteed to work as in past trips.
