We are in a car from Edinburgh to Canterbury (A1) and need a halfway overnight stop.
Any recommendations for quaint, historically (Roman) interesting stop with 3-4 star accommodations? Traveling June 9, 10, 11.
Most people would take the train from Canterbury to London (St.Pancras) & then walk over to London (Kings Cross)- which is next door - for the trains to Edinburgh. The whole point of driving would be to see places en-route. You would need more than 2 days to travel the distance by car and see places en-route. Some of the places of interest that would be on or near the direct route are:> Cambridge, York (which is where many people using the train spend a night or 2), Durham, Newcastle (maybe), Bamburgh Castle & Alnwick Castle (Northumberland).
York makes the most logical sense as it's about 1/2 way between your cities. It's a large city and most people wouldn't use the term quaint to describe it, but it's very historical, founded by the Romans, and very very interesting. Also because it's large and a popular stop between Edinburgh and London there are plenty of 3-4 star accommodations.
"most people wouldn't use the term quaint to describe it,"
I'm pretty sure everyone I know wouldn't use the word "quaint" at all. :-)
harleydonski, your comment made me smile, I agree that the term 'quaint' doesn't come up in a lot of my conversations either. ☺
Come down the A1 instead of the motorway and stop overnight in Stamford. One of my favourite towns in the UK.
Another vote for Stamford, a great Georgian town.
As others have said, taking the train would be preferable. If you have to drive, the A1 is a more interesting option than the M1 and this currently has fewer road works and speed restrictions.
Thank you Pete W and Jennifer!
We booked a hotel and have tickets to see Midsummer Night's Dream at Tolethorpe Hall in Rutland the night we are in town!
