Early Music Festival in York

We will be in York for two days during the early music festival in July. We may want to hear a concert and are wondering whether tickets sell out far in advance, or if we may be able to get them when we arrive. Are there other festival events besides what is advertised (concerts in the park? lute players in a cafe?) We've never been to this festival and are trying to get an idea of what it's like. Thanks!
