Do most hotels hold your luggage until
check-in time if you are in town early? I don’t want to lug my luggage around for hours as i sightsee.

Some do, some don't. The best thing is to contact the hotel and ask.

I’ve never had a hotel not willing to hold my bag. I have a carry on suitcase, so it doesn’t take much room. I’ve asked ahead of time if I’m staying at a B&B type lodging, and they have also been willing to store it for me.

Any legit hotel/hostel/guesthouse will do this.
If its a vacation rental or similar - probably not
