Dublin to London, plus a side trip?

Hello all,

My family is planning its first visit to England for this summer. We plan to fly into Dublin, spend a few days there, and then head to London, where we'll stay for about ten days before going home to the US. I'm getting ready to buy our plane tickets, but I'm debating where else if anywhere we want to go besides Dublin and London.

I've really wanted to see Chatsworth House in Derbyshire (big Mitford Family fan), but can't figure out a way to get there easily without driving (manual transmission + left side driving = it ain't happening). So I was looking at ways to get there from Dublin (ferry and train seemed a possible option) before taking the train down to London, but we'd still have to hire taxis locally around Chatsworth, probably. So maybe that's too much bother (we're a family of five-- probably need a taxi van or two taxis?).

Now I'm considering York for a few days, instead-- fly from Dublin to York, stay a few days, then train to London (much easier!). Or just Dublin, then fly to London, and maybe a day trip to Stonehenge or Cambridge (haven't actually looked into transport to either yet, but have heard they're good day trips from London). Any thoughts/experience with any of this? We traditionally have bad luck with trains (I've never met a train station I haven't cried at... only a small exaggeration), so I'm wondering if I even want to deal with trains on this trip. Thanks!

You could fly Dublin to East Midlands Airport then go by train from the nearby East Midlands Parkway Station to Chesterfield (about 39 minutes). From there a bus or pre-booked cab to Chatsworth, perhaps stay over nearby (Baslow?).

You could also fly into Birmingham, train from Birmingham International to Birmingham New Street to pick up a connecting train to Chesterfield.

Reverse that to pick up a train to London from East Midlands Parkway or Birmingham.

or for York - fly from Dublin to Manchester then train to York

(what's the problem with trains?)

Thank you, I'll check that route to York as well. Hee... we just have bad luck with trains. We got rerouted to Brussels a few years ago when flying to Paris, got on the train, didn't get off the train quickly enough to transfer (door shut in our faces-- luckily we were all on the same side), had to stay on and turn around in Ghent, FINALLY got to Paris late at night, hours after our AirBnB host had expected us. And on our trip to Germany this spring, we were travelling by train from Berlin to Rothenburg, when a huge storm came through and delayed everything-- we had four out of six(?) trains cancelled, and got in close to midnight, about ten hours late. So I'm a little leary... ;o)

Okay but bad weather can impact on any mode of transport. As for not getting off the train....well you won't do that again,

Why not simply take the ferry from Dublin to Holyhead (NW tip of Wales) and then train to Conwy/Conway in English? NW Wales has the wonderful Snowdonia National Park.http://www.eryri-npa.gov.uk/home

Chester is also worth a visit and is on the Holyhead > Conwy > Llandudno Junction > Chester > England railway. (You could buy a ticket from Conwy to Chester - have a look around and then have another ticket to anywhere in England). For London (Euston), advance purchase a ticket with >https://www.virgintrains.co.uk
Virgin trains operate Holyhead > Bangor > Llandudno Junction (1 mile from Conwy/ Llandudno) > Chester > London (Euston). Only Arriva Trains Wales stop at Conwy and you must inform the guard that you wish to alight / signal to driver for departures.
