We will be heading from Caernarfon to York on Oct 1st. & deciding if we should drop the car off in Chester and take the train to York or drive to York. We want to spend a few hours exploring Chester.
A few questions to clarify options:
Is there a place in Chester to leave our luggage while we wander about the town?
What should we concentrate on seeing in Chester?
We will have lunch in Chester before heading to York, where would a good pub lunch be had?
Are there some interesting sites to visit between Chester & York?
Have I forgotten anything to ask.
Thanks.
You could drop off car in Chester, then take train to York. If you go to stasher.com and they can arrange for you to store your luggage while in Chester.
The Church is a nice place to get a drink and something to eat at.
Car and train travel take about the same length of time, about 2.5 hours. The train requires a connection at either Manchester or Newton-le-Willows, and of course buying the tickets (versus paying for parking and fuel). Depending on the time of day that you originally picked up the car, keeping it may or may not add an extra day to your rental time, which also may or may not affect the price (e.g. 5, 6, or 7 days often all cost the same with a weekly rate).
Chester is a lovely place to spend time, with a good cathedral and at least one good museum. The medieval walls circle the center. It's well worth a visit. You can figure out the economics of car vs. train from Chester to York, Laura mentioned the variables to consider. But also consider whether you want to drive on busy motorways or sit back on a train (even having to change). If you won't be needing the car in York, I'd say take the train.
