Is an international driving permit necessary to drive in England/Scotland? Thanks in advance.
No it is used for countries where English is not.the first language.
It's a good idea because it informs anyone pulling you over that your state-issued license is a valid one. But this wouldn't be as much of an issue in an English-speaking country.
We always bring one with us, including on our recent trip to Scotland. I have been told and have read that if you are pulled over by the police for a traffic violation, or if you are in an accident, police might ask to see it. Don't know for sure if they will but why not play it safe. They only cost $10.
According to the gov.uk website, “ You can drive any type of small vehicle (for example cars or motorcycles) listed on your full and valid licence for 12 months from when you last entered Great Britain (GB).”
No IDP required.
Thanks everyone for your input.
