We will be leaving the Chipping Campden area on a Thursday morning next month with a destination of Keswick in the Lake District. We would appreciate any advice on a driving route, especially getting through the congestion around Birmingham and between Liverpool and Manchester. We prefer scenic roads but realize that the distance may require using motorways most of the way.
You can actually avoid going really near to Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester. You can easily travel A roads South of Liverpool. North of there the M6 is great for the quicker part of the trip. Just get a GPS in your car or on your phone to let you know about congestion and road work. The roads in the Lake District will have lots of tourist traffic. Look at the National Trust UK web site for a lot of itinerary ideas. They also have an Overseas Visitor Touring Pass available for Individuals, Couples and Families for time frames of 7 or 14 days. It is good for several hundred historic sites and parkland locations and include parking. You can order it online and pick it up at one of their listed sites.
We used the M6 that runs just east of Manchester and Birmingham.
