Driving from Cornwall to Glasgow

Planning a driving trip in August from Cornwall to Glasgow. We love history, castles, and lore...great food, fun and lodgings, from Inns, Boutique Hotels and Castle stays. We'll have 10 days to make our way. We understand we're planing our trip during high season. Any tips will be much appreciated. Thank you.

You could easily fill your 10 days in southern Britain. Between Cornwall and Glasgow, you have the Brit equivalent of Interstate highways. To see the places of interest, you would need to use the much slower ordinary roads. I would also advise that the best of Scottish scenery is north of Glasgow. Check your distances/timings here:>

Rather than going through the Midlands (Birmingham area), you could cross the M48 Severn Bridge & leave at first junction on Welsh side of estuary. CHEPSTOW CASTLE > TINTERN ABBEY (ruin) > A466 towards Monmouth >

The castle in Ludlow is called - wait for it - Ludlow Castle. Most of the castle is, like the best castles, partially ruined. However it has tourist accommodation inside the castle walks: http://www.ludlowcastle.com/accommodation

The whole town is very attractive. One of the most beautiful towns in England. And the castle is right there in the town, walking distant from great shops, restaurants and a good market.

I would second this recommendation for staying in Ludlow. This is a superb town, but one little-frequented by foreign tourists. It is a very nice place to stroll around in the evening after a meal in one of its excellent restaurants. Nearby is the quaint Stokesay Castle, and the Welsh Border Mountains are close.

you could do worse than Ludlow if you collect Michelin stars
