I will be helping a friend move from the US to York. We are flying into Manchester airport and need to get to York. I would normally take the train, but we will have more luggage this time (due to moving). Can anyone recommend a driver / car for hire company in this area? Thanks.

Our experience has been that car services based in the destination city or town seem to know the quickest and best routes. Not sure why, but it just seems that way.

I can't help with recommendations but I would book a taxi from a York taxi firm.
It is very possible they will have dropped a York local at the airport so will be very happy to have a paying trip back.

these businesses tend to have options of station wagons and various sized mini-buses (do not ask about vans, it means something else here). Obviously make sure they know that the luggage is out of proportion to the number of people. And be aware, arriving with a huge amount of luggage is likely to raise questions at customs so warn the driver to expect you later than others of the same flight. They tend to watch flight trackers and pull up at the terminal as they expect most people to be coming out - but they have to pay to wait there so won't want to be too early.
