Dress code in Munich

I just watched Rick's video of Munich and every single man is wearing long pants, no shorts. Was it taped during Winter or is that what men are supposed to wear. I'll be there in a few days; should I take all the shorts out of my bag and stuff it with pants? Please advise ASAP. I'm leaving Friday. Thanks, Jay

Hi al, try reposting this under Germany. A couple pair of shorts are fine but I think you need some pants too! Have a good trip!

Unless the forecast for next week is showing temps in the 30s (the extended forecast I looked at showed temps in the 20s - celcius), I'd take long pants, and maybe one pair of shorts.

I don't think Munich has a dress code. If you are referring to this one,
https://www.ricksteves.com/watch-read-listen/video/tv-show/munich
It was filmed in 2003. I don't think I would rely on a 15 year old video for fashionable attire.
Pack the shorts, plus a pair of suspenders and a checked shirt. Maybe they will think you're wearing lederhosen from a long way away. Seriously though, if it gets really hot, you may be the only comfortable person in town.

After viewing the Munich sections of that show, look carefully and you'll see a lot of men wearing shorts.

Sam--- the episode you reference shows a 'taped july 2004' at the end.

I use pants with zip off legs---- "zip on- zip off"... repeat as needed

I am in Munich right now and I have seen plenty of men wearing shorts, including me. While I normally wear long pants it has just been too hot to wear them. I do wear pants with the zip-on zip-off legs.

Why are you concerned about what anyone else might be wearing? Not once, in all my travels, have I considered what other people might be wearing at my destination. The only thing I consider is the weather and what my plans are, I have absolutely no interest in what other people might be wearing.

You're going to Munich in June, if it was me then I'd be in shorts. I've been in Munich during a heatwave in June and the temperatures were 35+, I'd have hated being in jeans or trousers.

I know plenty of people like them but I find those zip trouser/shorts combos ghastly!

We lived in Augsburg, near Munich for four years. The Germans have a saying about Summer in Germany, it is nice, both weeks of it.
