Looking to take a tour of Downton Abbey from London. Any recommendations?
The fictional Downton Abbey manor house, set north of London in the series, was filmed at the real Highclere Castle, to the southwest. They admit paid visitors on select dates. Here’s its Website: https://www.highclerecastle.co.uk/
A couple of years ago we took a Downton Abbey tour from London that was terrific. Bus picked us at a London tube station somewhat on the west side and had a guide tour of the Abbey and grounds. Then we travel to where the village scenes are shot - about 50 miles away from the abbey. Had a nice tour there and some of the trick photography was explained as to how the village was made to look bigger than it actual is. Then, of course, bused back to the tour station. It was an all day trip.I will to dig up the name of the tour company.
One issue you might have is that the abbey is not open all the time.
Hi Downton fans,
Have you run across this forum thread from last month...https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/england/highclere-castle-full-day-trip
Have fun!
You can take the train. Be advised that some dates in the summer are already sold out (e.g. the July 12th date I wanted. Bah!).
