Docklands Light Rail to London City Airport

We are off to Switzerland next week! We have a short stopover in London (2 nights) and then a flight to Zurich from London City Airport. Our apartment is near Bank Station, and it looks like a straightforward trip to the airport on the Docklands Light Rail.

Is there anything unusual or tricky we need to know about this? I can see that we need a train bound for Woolwich Arsenal, not Beckton. Is there anything else we need to consider? I assume we just tap in and out with our contactless payment cards (one Oyster, one AmEx). How much will we need on the Oyster card to cover the fare?

Thanks for your help. I am looking forward to this new adventure—-and not having to return to Heathrow.

The fare is £3.70 peak (0630 to 0930 and 1600 to 1900 Monday to Friday), £3 at all other times.

The station is at the airport so you exit straight into the terminal, and it's a compact terminal.

As different from Heathrow as possible.

LCY has new advanced scanners so you can take up to 2 litres of liquids through- see this link for LCY security rules- https://londoncityairport.com/security-and-baggage/hand-baggage#:~:text=Please%20follow%20the%20instructions%20on%20video%20screens%20to,before%20it%20enters%20the%20CT%20scanner.%20More%20items

The only unusual thing is that the DLR has no exit gates. There are terminals on the wall by the exit at all stations which you tap off on. Follow the crowd- everyone else will be doing the same thing.

knowing that you don't like tunnels, just to say that the DLR at Bank starts off in a short tunnel but very shortly is above ground and stays above ground. Don't worry if you don't see a driver - it is fully automated. There is a member of staff who supervises but not usually from the front of the train.

@Lola - thanks for asking this! We are doing the exact same thing in April. I've never tried London City Airport but boy it looks nice and easy!!!!!!!

I flew out of London City Airport in August 2022 when Heathrow was experiencing so many cancellations of short haul flights. I found it easy to ride Docklands Light Rail to London City Airport. The one thing that was different was how to "tap out" with my Oyster card (or you can use a credit card) after I exited Dockland Light Rail. Instead of tapping out at a turnstile, I tapped out (as I recall) on a square sized receptable on the wall. If you watch other passengers, you'll see what to do. Not hard/just different than the Underground.

So if you are flying tonight to LHR that means that hopefully you are leaving for Zurich on Friday.

I am just checking because there is engineering work on the DLR on this Saturday and Sunday closing the line between Bank and Poplar.

You would have to divert via either West Ham or Stratford if going to LCY this weekend.

Just to reiterate the above.
It can be easy to miss if you are not paying attention and looking for an exit gate. When Oyster was in its early days, I missed a tapping point on the DLR to LCY and got charged the max fare.
