Do not travel today from London Euston to Carlisle

The West Coast main line is blocked between Penrith and Oxenholme in the Lake District due to a freight train derailment.

Almost all trains are cancelled north of Preston and Avanti West Coast/Trans Pennine are unable to source replacement buses.

They have issued a Do Not Travel notice.

Please use LNER via either Newcastle or Leeds until the incident is resolved.

A very few trains will run, subject to heavy delays. Northern will run to Lancaster, for service buses north (at customer cost). Scheduled trains are running from Lancaster to Carlisle via Barrow but they have very limited capacity and take over 3 hours.

This happened late yesterday afternoon and must be fairly serious if it's still going on. We arrived at Preston to pick up our daughter-in-law and granddaughter off the 17.38 train from Euston yesterday to find the train they were on was summarily cancelled as we stood there.

We actually have a forum member who was had to postpone their visit to the Lake District today due to this incident.

A shame, if I'd heard sooner alternative travel plans would have been devised.

Word in that trains are now starting to roll, although currently with single line working at Tebay. Disruption and short notice cancellations (due to displaced trains and crew) will continue until close of service tonight. Currently delays of up to 80 minutes are being experienced in the area, on the trains which are running.

This incident has now cleared. The line has re-opened in both directions. Passengers with all ticket types involving stations north of Preston which were dated on Wednesday and Thursday will be allowed to use them for travel on Friday
