Disruption on LNER - 22nd Sep

I’ve been informed that late on Fri 21st and all day Sat 22nd September that the line between Berwick and Edinburgh is closed for maintenance, meaning some changes to the schedule.

LNER trains between London and Edinburgh will run as normal, however they’ll take a diversion after Newcastle that will add 90mins to the journey time. Replacement buses calling at the intermediate stops (Morpeth, Alnmouth, Berwick, Dunbar) are also running between Newcastle and Edinburgh.

With CrossCountry trains, a replacement bus is running between Berwick and Edinburgh during this time.

What is LNER? Obviously a train, but which line?

LNER = London North Eastern Railway. It is the company that runs long distance trains on the "East Coast" route from London to Edinburgh, plus branches off that line. They only took over the route earlier this year, after the previous operator (Virgin East Coast) closed down. Normally trains every 30 minutes between London and Edinburgh, journey time 4½ hours but considerably longer on this date.

Cross Country runs long distance trains that go diagonally across the country, avoiding London. For example: Edinburgh - Newcastle Upon Tyne - York (so far East Coast route) - Birmingham - Bristol (change for Bath) - Exeter - Cornwall, or . . . - Birmingham - Oxford - . . .
